My mom turned on the computer this morning and it stopped during the boot to prompt her with a polite message about our hard drive's eminent failure.

Sounds... bad, right?

2040 Days Cursed, 773 Victims

Yup. Sounds pretty bad. Have you tried rebooting, to see if the message pops up again?

Of course, there's always the possibility that said reboot won't work, because the HDD failed...

Now's the time to make sure you'ved backed up all your important stuff. If the HDD does die, you may be able to install it as a Slave and get your stuff off of it, but better safe than sorry.

NewEgg usually has good deals on HDDs. Just make sure you don't make the same mistake as me, and order a SATA drive if you only have IDE hook up stuffs...

Edit: Fixed a typo

That message is a result of one of the drive's S.M.A.R.T. parameters going out of spec. S.M.A.R.T. is a neat technology built into modern hard drives and BIOSes that monitors vital parts of the drive and keeps track of their performance. If anything goes out of spec too often (too many read/write errors, slow spin-up time, etc.), the BIOS prints out that friendly warning next time you turn it on. The drive *might* not be in imminent danger of failing (the "danger level" specs are probably set pretty high in order to give you enough time to back up your stuff), but I wouldn't take any chances...catastrophic drive failure is something you never want to deal with.

What a beautiful day, kupo!

T-GEN, I think I saw you yesterday at the PUB around 12:40 waiting for the 66. So, if that was you, I'm sorry that I didn't get away from the driver who was talking my ear off soon enough to say hello.

I don't have any advice for you on the computer front. I just thought I would say hi.

Did you? I was there at that time, so you must have seen me. I totally didn't see you, so there's no need to be sorry... but then maybe I should be sorry for being unobservant?
